I would be remiss not to meniton the importance of this date in Texas history. March 2, 1836, almost two weeks after Mexican General Santa Anna sent his army to reclaim San Antonio (which had been lost to the Texans in the Siege of Bexar), members of the Convention of 1836 signed The Texas Declaration of Independence. Independece would not be won until April 21, 1836, at the Battle of Jacinto, when a small army of Texans under the leadership of Sam Houston (whose birthday is also March 2) defeated Santa Anna and the Mexican army. ![]() |
